Season here on St. John has officially arrived. Not marked by the end of hurricane season, but rather by the soulful sounds coming out of Cruz Bay. In off-season there are few venues with live music, but in-season we are blessed with the beats of many talented musicians. Earlier this month I was at the Beach Bar (www.beachbarstjohn.com) in Cruz Bay watching a local band made up of severely talented musicians that calls themselves Butter. Smooth as, that’s for sure, band members include “Johnny B” Bullock on lead guitar, Bo Mangie on bass guitar, Troy Hubbard on drums, Jared Warren on keyboard, and Barney “Broheem” Proctor on sax. That’s the core band, and last night they were joined by two other fabulous local musicians, Cat Braaten on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Wanda Burgos on bongos (which is just fun to say). The night was electric and the musicians were on fire, killing cover songs like Isn’t it a Pity, Down by the River, and Soul of a Man. Butter also belts out some noteworthy originals like Frangipanties, Johnny C, Pipe and Lighter, and the attention grabbing Snoop’s Droop. While Cruz Bay is peppered with bars and restaurants, it is the Beach Bar that continues to be the beacon for great music. With a small wooden stage, oddly shaped bar, and seats on the sand, the Beach Bar attracts those looking to kick-back and tap their toes in paradise. Cheers!
