Located behind the Enighed car barge dock in Cruz Bay is the Marketplace, a 3-level shopping center with Starfish Market grocery anchoring the first level. Parking is never a problem at the Marketplace, there’s plenty of seating around the center, and the bathrooms are the best public restrooms on island, maybe even across all the Caribbean. Clean, air-conditioned, and ready for business, you’ll find these vast oases of relief on every level. While the bathrooms and Starfish Market are maintstays, the other spaces have turned a few tenants. The small space that housed Kaleidoscope Video is now the Snorkel Spot, across from Starfish Market on the first level, just before the Pink Papaya Cafe (best coffee on island and great second-hand reads). Head up one level and you’ll find more beach accessories at Chelsea Drugstore and St. John Hardware. Also on the second level, checkout Kimberly Boulon’s fine art gallery – a great place to find a unique gift. Pickup lunch at Sam & Jack’s deli on the top level, or head to the favorite spot of locals: Etta’s West Indian Cuisine, a small kitchen across from PostNet on the 2nd level. Miss Etta Samuel and her sister Zelphia have been satisfying our taste buds for years, but the newest location here at the Marketplace has easy parking and plenty of seating. St. Johnians love to socialize and Etta’s is a hot spot when running errands. Here’s the best tip I can offer: if you see buttered conch on the menu board at Etta’s, STOP, ORDER, EAT. Enjoy!
